Boriša Vuković, Zorica Šeguljev, Svetislav Ristić

Abstract

Immediately after recognition of AIDS as the new clinical entity and detection of infective agent, epidemiology was introduced and prevention was developed. In spite of achieved results, this disease in short period of time becomes the most significant health problem world-wide. The number of registered cases of AIDS doesn't present global epidemiological situation because it depends on diagnostics possibility, development of health service and information system, and the number of diseased is only a slighter part of total number of infected persons. It is estimated that 33,4 million of people world-wide are HIV infected at present. Epidemiological situation is different is certain parts in the world. On the one hand, in South-Saharan region where lives the tenth part of the whole population of this planet, is concentrated 2/3 of total HIV infected population. On the other hand, in developed part of the world, where lives less than 5 % of total HIV infected population, wide application of antiretrovirus therapy resulted in reduction of mortality an incidence of AIDS, but frequency of appearance of new infection is not reduced. The number of diseased in our country classifies Yugoslavia in the group of European countries with lower cumulative morbidity. In spite of this, increase of incidence and heterosexual transmission makes epidemiological situation unfavorable.
