According to generally adopted opinion about smoking as an important factor in genesis and evolution of atherosclerotic disease, we studied, using colo Doppler echosonography, changes on carotid arteries in hypersensitive patients having history of disease at least 10 years. Our study included 34 patients with arterial hypertension, out of whom 22 were smokers whereas 10 were nonsmokers. We analyzed structural changes in carotid arteries, which can be seen in results, and concluded that smoking as a risk factor had influence on the development of arthrosclerotic changes, which is proportional to „smoking history" and a number of smoked cigarettes.
