The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of transurethral and transvesical prostatectomy on the quality of life. Forty patients with the confirmed benign prostatic hyperplasia were analyzed. Transurethral and transvesical prostatectomy were performed in all the patients. International Prostate Symptom Score and Quality of Life score were analyzed before as well as three and six months after the surgery. All the results were compared with the controls. Elimination symptoms showed better regression than storage symptoms. The quality of life significantly improved after the surgery. There is no statistically significant difference between the operated patients and controls both in symptoms of voiding and the quality of life. There is a statistically significant improvement in voiding and storage symptoms. The quality of life was significantly improved after the surgery. Six months after the surgery the symptoms of voiding and quality of life are not statistically different from the controls. Acta Medica Medianae 2005; 44 (3): 15 – 19.
