SUPRACONDYLAR FRACTURES OF THE FEMUR TREATED BY
INTERNAL FIXATION

Fractures of the distal femur are difficult to treat because of the
problems arising from anatomical reconstruction of the articular
surfaces when good stabilization of the fragments must be achieved.
Anatomical reconstruction is often not possible. Such fractures can be
open, or associated with the soft tissue damage or major trauma to other
parts of the body.
The paper presents a prospective and retrospective review of 10 patients
with supracondylar femoral fractures treated with Mitkovic dynamic
internal fixator, in the period between July 2002 and September 2003.
Mean age at presentation was 54 years (range 19-74) with the male to
female ratio of 1:1. The follow-up period was 12 months. Results were
evaluated using the criteria described by Neer et al. (1967) whereby
excellent results were achieved in five cases (50%), good in four (40%),
and satisfactory in one (10%). At the follow-up, the average range of
motion of the knee was 115°. All patients had full extension and an
average loss of flexion compared to the contralateral knee of 14°. No
deep infections were found in this series.
According to the results and the simple tehnique of application, it can
be concluded that Mitkovic dynamic internal fixator is successful and
suitable for routine practise.
