Endophthalmitis represents one of the most urgent conditions in ophthalmology, and it is characterized by both anterior and posterior eye segment inflammation as a consequence of some bacterial or fungal infection.

This paper presents clinical cases of endophthalmitis, classification of endophthalmitis regarding aetiologic factors and different aetiologic factors which may cause it. A special emphasis is placed on the occurrence of endophthalmitis after a cataract surgery.

In addition, the paper presents clinical characteristics of the posttraumatic endogenous and fungal endophthalmitis.

Furthermore, risk factors that cause the occurrence of the postoperative endophthalmitis and the importance of  prevention of the postoperative endophthalmitis are indicated in the paper. The preventive procedures are also recommended in the prophylaxis.

Especially important segment of this paper is dedicated to the therapy of acute endophthalmitis that is based on the recommendations of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS). Acta Medica Medianae 2009;48(1): 56-62.
